Apr 11, 2009– Sayle – Breckinridge, TX
The weather finally cooperates! It was a near perfect day to play on the slab. It is great to be back at the Sayle Unit. This is one of the best-run units and volunteers are made to feel very welcome. Our thanks go out to all the CO’s (correctional officers) that made the experience smooth and non-eventful. We were blessed with an attendance of 277. The men were engaged and enjoyed our worship time together. We counted over 100 decisions. Again, the response to the Holy Spirit was tremendous.
Mitchell’s lesson came from Luke 24 and is always a favorite. The words of Luke bring the resurrection of Jesus to life for each of us to embrace the glory of God’s power. It is important to note the surprise of the disciples that Jesus is raised from the dead. They were the first people to doubt the resurrection. They were the first “skeptics” to be convinced. Just how much they struggled to understand the reality of what happened can be followed throughout the 24th chapter. Even though scripture and Jesus himself promised a resurrection, the disciples had to slowly and methodically come to see and believe what truly happened. The scripture says their eyes were opened. God is the creator of life and is sovereign over death.
As Mitchell points out, the same power that raised Jesus also raised Lazarus from the dead (John 11). That same power raises us out of the death of sin. He reveals Himself to us in our relationships and in our experiences. It is up to us to “open our eyes” and respond to his call. His gentle urgings are never convenient but always perfectly timed. Don’t wait until it is convenient or until you are “cleaned-up”. He accepts you as you are and empowers you to change. So goes the saying, “If you keep doing what you’ve been doing, you will keep getting what you’ve been getting”. Christians are called to be different and that means change is the beginning of obedience to God’s will. Our prayer is that you will give it a chance if you haven’t already. Be alive and new today.
